Malaysian Minister Proposes to Filter Internet
Submitted by Rebekah Heacock on OpenNet: “Last week Malaysia’s Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr. Rais Yatim announced that the country would consider implementing a nationwide Internet filtering plan similar to China’s Green Dam. This week, the Prime Minister pulled an about face, claiming there would be “no change” in the country’s Internet policy.
People are really getting ridiculous with these ideas of filtering the internet. Ever heard of free speech? Ever heard of the fact that people are adults and should be allowed to consume whatever material they want from the net? Of course there are certain legal responsibilities, like protecting minors from online exploitation, but filtering and deciding what people are allowed to consume shouldn't be one of them.
The internet is a repository of information that should be free for anyone to contribute to and take from.
Rais Yatim is fast becoming one of my favourite sources of jokes, with the number of stupidly funny things he says.
This news is no longer new, but I just stumbled upon it via Bradley's blog.
Someone please make Rais Yatim sign a contract to never again speak to the media.
